*A Task in BarBooks is the equivalent of a Fee Line.*
Creating a Task and using the Timer both result in the creation of a Task (Fee line). This can be done in 3 different areas of BarBooks.
1. Main Tasks Tab
Click “Tasks” in the main left-hand navigation panel.
This page shows all Tasks across all Matters.
To narrow the list, click the “Filters” button in the top right.
For example, you can filter by Matter to see only the Tasks related to the Matter you are currently working on.
Enter Duration Manually
Click “New Task” in the top right.
The Task creation window will appear.
Select the Matter (Case) you are working on.
Enter a Description.
Enter the Duration.
Click “Create.”
If the Task is still in progress, you can Save as Draft and set it as active it later. Draft Tasks cannot be Billed.
Once created, the Task will appear in your list. To edit a Task, click the pencil icon / ellipsis (⋯) on the far right of the Task.
Use the Built-in Timer
Click “Start Timer” in the top right.
The timer will begin running and the Task creation window will appear.
Select the Matter (Case) you are working on.
Enter a Description.
Click “Create.”
If the Task is still in progress, you can Save as Draft and set it as active it later. Draft Tasks cannot be Billed.
The Task will now be created and the timer will continue running.
Pausing or Stopping the Timer
Use the controls at the top of the screen (or inline with the Task):
Pause icon: temporarily pauses the timer
Stop icon: stops and saves the timer
⚠️ The timer entry is only saved and updated when you click “Stop.”
Restarting or Editing a Task
To restart the timer, click the stopwatch icon on the right side of the relevant Task.
To edit the Task, click the ellipsis (⋯) on the far right.
2. Inside A Matter
Click “Matters” in the main left-hand navigation panel.
This page shows all of your Matters.
To narrow the list, click the “Filters” button in the top right.
Click into the Matter you are working on.
Select the Tasks Tab inside the Matter.
Enter Duration Manually
Click “New Task”.
The Task creation window will appear.
Enter a Description.
Enter the Duration.
Click “Create.”
If the Task is still in progress, you can Save as Draft and set it as active it later. Draft Tasks cannot be Billed.
Once created, the Task will appear in your list. To edit a Task, click the ellipsis (⋯) on the far right of the Task.
Restarting or Editing a Task
Inside a Matter you can only restart a Timer on an existing Task.
- To restart the timer, click the stopwatch icon on the right side of the relevant Task. To edit the Task, click the ellipsis (⋯) on the far right.

Use the controls at the top of the screen (or inline with the Task):

3. Quick Actions Shortcut
Click “Quick Actions” on the top of the screen.
All Tasks created through Quick Actions will appear in the Main Tasks Tab as well as the Tasks tab inside of a Matter.
Enter Duration Manually
Click “Create Task” inside of Quick Actions.
The Task creation window will appear.
Select the Matter (Case) you are working on.
Enter a Description.
Enter the Duration.
Click “Create.”
If the Task is still in progress, you can Save as Draft and set it as active it later. Draft Tasks cannot be Billed.
Once created, the Task will appear in your list. To edit a Task, click the ellipsis (⋯) on the far right of the Task.

The timer will begin running and the Task creation window will appear.
Select the Matter (Case) you are working on.
Enter a Description.
Click “Create.”
If the Task is still in progress, you can Save as Draft and set it as active it later. Draft Tasks cannot be Billed.
The Task will now be created and the timer will continue running.
